Stepa is an American nu metal band founded in Newbury Park California in the year 1998, originally under the name Phlip. The band was started by singer Blake Beckman and bassist Jessie Krapff who invited their other friends Mark Thornley (drums), Shane Swaney(Guitar), Brenden Oates (guitar), and Chaz Khindski (turntables). All members of the band were students of Newbury Park Highschool. They spent their early years making demos and playing smaller show, notable ones being talent shows.
Eventually, their music reached the ears of Interscope records, who signed the band in 2001. Phlip soon changed their name to Stepa, a name Khindski suggested after listening to the song "Hot Stepper" by Ini Kamoze. They released a self titled promo on the label, which would be the only release on Interscope. The band was shortly dropped from Interscope due to them changing a song and the label not enjoying it. The spanish label, Locomotive Records, signed the band and released their only ablum, Stepa on July 30, 2002 with the singles Aquarium and Spaceships And Airplanes as additional collectables. The band recorded two music videos for the singles mentioned however, their computer crashed and deleted all the progress for Aquarium and some effects for Spaceships and Airplanes. Some portions of the Spaceships and Airplanes video were recorded at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center.
In 2003, Stepa made some changes, both in their sound and members. Shane and some other members on the band wanted to play music that explored negative emotions with a post hardcore sound. Chaz and Blake left due to not liking the new changes. Teenage Funeral was released in the same year but with Shane on vocals. Blake formed a band called Fermata after leaving Stepa. They released only one album titled Vessel in the year 2006. Stepa officially disbanded in 2004 after Shane left the band. Some members of Stepa moved on to a new project called "Fire Set Fire" with members of Mureau, but they never officially released anything. Fermata would break up soon and Blake made a new solo project called "...And The Fixation" with once again, no officially released material.
In 2021, the band announced that they have reformed and were in the works of making a new album. Sadly in the same year, Chaz Khinski passed away. The band to this day have released two singles and are in the process of making their newest single, Idiot Summer.
